Here’s a guide to some of the top Gold Coast fishing spots and tips on using the gear in your starter pack effectively for whiting and bream.
Nerang River at HOTA (Home of the Arts)
Location Tips: Whiting fishing near HOTA can be exceptionally productive, particularly around the bend with the red channel marker. This spot features a large sand bank where whiting are known to feed.
Best Time to Fish:
-
Season: Summer
-
Tide: Last two hours of the incoming tide through to the first three hours of the outgoing tide.
Recommended Tackle & Technique:
-
Bait: Beachworms, bloodworms, or the Vexed micro meat whiting jig.
-
Rigging: If bait fishing, use a running sinker rig with a 6lb – 8lb leader, 60cm to 1m in length, and a small swivel. A size 4 ball sinker is recommended to manage the current.
-
Whiting Jig: For the Vexed micro meat whiting jig, cast up current and allow it to bounce along the bottom. This movement mimics natural bait and catches the attention of whiting. You can fish this jig with or without bait, as the action alone often triggers bites.
Carters Bank near Wavebreak Island
Location Tips: Carters Bank offers excellent fishing for both whiting and bream. The sand bank on an incoming tide is a hotspot for these species.
Recommended Tackle & Technique:
-
Bait: Beachworms, bloodworms, yabbies, and prawns.
-
Rigging: Set up a running sinker rig with a 60cm, 6lb trace and a size 2-3 ball sinker. Cast towards the sand bank to allow the current to naturally position your bait where fish are likely to be feeding.
-
Whiting Jig: Use the Vexed Micro meat when drifting along the edge of the sandbank vertically bouncing it up and down across the bottom.
Doug Jennings Park at The Spit
Location Tips: This area, particularly on the sandbanks opposite Doug Jennings Park, is a popular spot for targeting whiting and bream, especially during the incoming tide.
Recommended Tackle & Technique:
-
Bait: Beachworms, bloodworms, yabbies, and prawns.
-
Rigging: Use a 60cm, 6lb trace with a size 3 ball sinker. This setup allows for a good presentation of bait in the shallows, where fish like to feed during the tidal movements.
-
Whiting Jig: For the Vexed micro meat whiting jig, cast up current and allow it to bounce along the bottom. This movement mimics natural bait and catches the attention of whiting. You can fish this jig with or without bait, as the action alone often triggers bites.
General Tips for Whiting and Bream Fishing on the Gold Coast
1. Use Red Tubing
Adding a 3-4cm piece of red tubing above your hook can increase your chances of hooking a fish. The tubing draws attention to your bait, especially when using worms, as it mimics an extension of the worm itself.
2. Bait Efficiency
When using worms as bait, remember that less is more. Use just enough to cover the straight shank of the hook with a small piece dangling, as whiting often suck in their food. Excess bait can reduce the chances of a quick hook-up and waste valuable bait.
3. Preserved Worms and Prawns
For convenience, our starter pack includes preserved worms and prawns, which can be very effective if fresh bait is unavailable. Simply follow the same techniques listed above for live bait and enjoy an effective fishing experience.
